*** Johnny (J.R.) Cash (Kingsland (Arkansas), 26 februari 1932 - Nashville (Tennessee), 12 september 2003) was een Amerikaanse countryzanger, gitarist en singer-songwriter. Hij werd wereldwijd bekend als The Man in Black (De man in het zwart) en viel op door zijn diepe baritonstem. Hij was van 1954 tot 1966 getrouwd met Vivian Liberto en vanaf 1968 met June Carter Cash, die op 15 mei 2003 overleed. Johnny Cash overleed later datzelfde jaar op 71-jarige leeftijd in zijn woning in Hendersonville, vlak bij Nashville vanwege ademhalingsstoornissen, veroorzaakt door diabetes. Hij was een van de invloedrijkste zangers, zowel binnen als buiten het country-genre. Zo belandde Johnny Cash in Rolling Stone op de 31e plaats in haar lijst van de honderd grootste artiesten aller tijden. ***
