Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) is een piloot die ternauwernood zijn
passagiersvliegtuig veilig aan de grond weet te brengen als de apparatuur het begeeft.
Hij wordt als held onthaald, maar na onderzoek blijkt dat hij onder invloed was van
drugs en alcohol. Terwijl Whitaker probeert de nasleep van de ramp te doorstaan,
doet de pilotenvakbond zijn best om de zaak onder de pet te houden om zo de
luchtvaartmaatschappij niet in een kwaad daglicht te stellen.
