Van Halen - Balance (Japanese Edition with Bonus Track)(1995)

Balance is the 10th studio album by American hard rock band Van Halen. It was released in 1995 and, to date, is the fourth and final Van Halen album of all-new material featuring lead singer Sammy Hagar. It was also a more complete divergence from their earlier, more heavy metal sound. The Japanese edition contains one bonus track.
It has the hard rock elements of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, mixed with the dark and somber themes from OU812. Although the album was mostly made at 5150 Studios, Hagar and producer Fairbairn recorded vocals at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver [hagar claims in his autobiography that this was because Eddie Van Halen was overbearing with his criticism and attempted direction of his vocal takes]. Originally, the title of the album was to be named Seventh Seal and, at some other point, The Club (nickname of their former manager Ed Leffler, who died in October 1993).

Balance tries to open up the Van Hagar formula somewhat. Eddie Van Halen sincerely attempts to improve the group musically, by adding more subtle and assured ballads and more fearless rockers. No matter how hard he tries, he's weighed down by the most predictable rhythm section in all of rock & roll, which gives each number the same unvarying deadlocked pulse, completely obliterating Eddie's increased musical sensitivity. Of course, he isn't helped by Sammy Hagar, either. With the first single, "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)," Hagar tries to follow the social conscience that served him so well on "Right Now." Unfortunately, he can't help himself and slips back to the raucous partying of "Amsterdam" - you know, the place where they're allowed to smoke pot and stuff.
