Post Description

Iron Butterfly formed in 1966 in San Diego and in early 1968 released their debut album Heavy after signing a deal with ATCO, an Atlantic Records subsidiary. The original members were Doug Ingle (vocals, keyboards), Jack Pinney (drums), Greg Willis (bass), and Danny Weis (guitar). They were soon joined by singer/frontman Darryl DeLoach.

This debut album from San Diego's psychedelic bunch is kick-off in heavier side of psychedelic side. There's urban legend that heavy rock derivated it's "heavy" prefix from name of this album. Most of the songs are leaning strongly on organ background riffs, especially "Posession" and "Unconcsious Power", while some other like "Get Out My Life, Woman", "Gentle As It May Seem" are fulfilled with groovy rhythm and guitar fill ins and solos with elements of garage rock. It's clearly seen that all of the songs are made by scheme of intertwined guitar and organ riffing, where originality is questionable, but still groovy and trippy enough to shake your booty. Although, their marked sign with hammond organ and guitar is different in song "So-Lo" where multiple vocals are brought to light. Guitar is really awesome in this one, constantly showing in background and suddenly emerging as lead role. Garage rock is higly recognizable in "Look For The Sun" while vocal sometimes is familiar with Steve Marriott's from Small Faces. "Fields Of Sun" is another strong track with hippie lyrics and great groove from bass and drums. High vocals in middle of song is kind of Uriah Heep-ish. Shortest song on album, "Stamped Ideas" is cheery little song and it's great to addition to album. Album ends up with "Iron Butterfly Theme", psychedelic jam that finally somehow shows up on this album. This album is very good, but it's overwhelmed with organ sound, there's no acoustic songs nor lenghty psych jam except last song. Recommended to psych rock fans that are into fuzzy sound of organ.
