Post Description

The National Geographic channel continues to showcase the best of its extensive high definition programme library with another chance to see this documentary (on 6 January), which follows the unique ecosystem of the Kalahari desert.

The Okavango river empties into the normally barren desert. It originates in the highlands of Angola, then flows south through Namibia before it reaches Botswana and the northern region of the Kalahari. Here it creates an amazing delta in the desert, encouraging a diverse range of wildlife to flourish there.

There are tiny, lush green islands sitting amid the deep blue water; fish eagles hunt for their food; quelea birds and flamingos flock in huge numbers; and giraffe gallop in the soft marshlands.

They are also joined by elephants, lions, Nile crocodiles and sitatunga antelope - all of them attracted by the extraordinary stretch of water that brings life to this part of Africa.
