One of the most powerful figures in all of history, Mao Tse Tung answered a need for change in China by introducing the Communist Cultural Revolution and overthrowing the ruling classes. Simultaneously, he became a brutal dictator, killing thousands of people in his efforts to instigate social reform and turning even family members against each other in an atmosphere oppressive with fear. This installment of A&E's Biography series gives voice to various people who either despised or venerated the former dictator. Following Mao's life from his mythical peasant upbringing, the documentary examines his philosophy, drawing from Mao's own works, most famously his LITTLE RED BOOK. Finally, some of theworld's foremost scholars on China examine the history of the country and the legacy of Mao Tse Tung.
