Post Description

Deer Drive is an animal shooting game for the Nintendo Wii. It"s definitely not a hunting game, but more of a shooting gallery type game where you get to shoot animals that are hunted throughout North America. It makes for a decent party game, but is pretty repetitive and offers not much in the way of long-term gaming value. I think it represents the ultimate deer hunting fantasy.

All you do in this game is shoot animals for points, and occasionally you have to shoot a bear before it eats you. Deer are your main target, though birds and squirrels will sometimes run out to make bonus targets. Each of the few dozen outdoor scenes in which you shoot will have a few different paths from where the steady stream of animals will come, and it"s up to you to shoot as many as you can and quickly. When the bear comes out, you will have to take him down pretty quickly or else he will kill you. The level will be considered complete when you have shot enough deer or other targets. There"s really not much more to it than that.

I had some issues with the control system in this game, mainly because it seemed like I couldn"t hit anything from afar despite the crosshairs being right over the target. One issue is that the aiming reticule is almost too big and it"s hard to see just where that target is pointed. Since all the deer and other animals are constantly moving, it makes things that much harder. It seemed like the only time I could get a good shot was when the deer were up close, and then they"d run off the screen before I could take them down with a second shot. I found the accuracy to be very questionable and it makes the game frustrating. It"s so unrealistic with its swarms of animals, then it tries to make the shooting system too dead-on.

The graphics in this game are actually pretty good with the wildlife scenery even though you can"t move around very much and the view only changes slightly. The animated animals are fairly realistic in how they run and jump, and the deer will fall down in lifelike (or dead-like) ways after being shot. Some parents might find the animal deaths a little too realistic, so this game might not be suited for especially young gamers. The sound effects are pretty basic with shooting sounds and the like.

In the end, I still got a kick out of playing Deer Drive. It"s really simple to pick up and play a level for a few minutes, but even more fun with friends. As long as you don"t expect some kind of hunting experience and can get past the idea of gunning down countless numbers of defenseless animals, then you might enjoy this one.
