Post Description
Formerly available only as a Japanese import at bank-breaking prices, Covers is now reasonably priced on domestic shelves, but only at one targeted retailer. Take your time. There are only ten songs, some unreleased and some culled from various limited edition releases, circa 2001 - 2009. Each is done in Jones' trademark sleepy style, but with no edge at all, so each competes with the others for losing your attention, in spite of their respective authors' pedigrees. Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Fats Domino, the Everlys, or Bob Dylan as sources, what could go wrong? Well, nondescript arrangements don't help. Song choices could have been more representative of the writers' best. And Jones seemingly phones in her vocals - there's little emotion, a scarcity of experimentation, and an overall carelessness of delivery. Several tracks suggest demo outtakes, complete with distorted or washed-out sound. The only two songs of note, blue or not, are Cline's "Sweet Dreams" (only because of guitarist Jim Campilongo's fluid, double-stop fills) and Horace Silver's "Peace" (an excellent, quiet-jazz, left-field detour from Covers' country immersion). For completists only.
