Good news for those of us charmed by Gregory Alan Isakov’s “Saint Valentine” single just arrived, as the South Africa-born, Colorado songwriter shared the full new record this week ahead of its July 9th release date. Singles can be deceiving, of course, but not on The Weatherman, in which Isakov makes tying a clever turn of phrase to a timeless melody sound easy. The LP churns with nuance, too, especially on standout closing cut “She Always Takes It Back.” “I’d never say, ‘I love you, dear,’ just to hear you say it back,” he sings, that last syllable broken into a fragile, four-note lift.
